Educator Career Continuum

Work Group Product

This work group will provide recommendations on the future of the career continuum for educators in Washington state, with a particular focus on ensuring educators have access to high-quality options for mid-career professional growth. The work group will determine recommendations that could be addressed within the field, with the PESB board, and with the Legislature. Recommendations to the PESB are tentatively scheduled for July 2018.

Draft recommendations for the Educator Career Continuum Work Group

Purpose

The purpose of the Educator Career Continuum Work Group is to provide recommendations to the Board on the future of the career-long continuum for educators, with a particular focus on how to ensure educators have access to high-quality, relevant continuing education for maintaining their certification.

This work group will be addressing the following related issues:

  • Tiered licensure: Traditionally, states have primarily viewed educator certification as more advanced proficiency on entry level standards. This work group may examine the concept of growth to also include branching into areas of specialized knowledge and skills and role-based credentialing.
  • Refreshing of educator knowledge and skills with concepts that new educators now come into the profession with but that were not covered in the preparation programs for experienced educators.
  • Coherence between evaluation and licensure, while respecting their separate purposes.
  • Continuing education: issues in quality, quantity, access and affordability
