Educational interpreters for the deaf

Purpose

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) is convening a focus group to review state policy on educational interpreters for the deaf. This new focus group is a result of recommendations from the credentialing for educators of the deaf workgroup, which convened in 2020.

State policy on educational interpreters for the deaf is set by both the Board and the Legislature. This focus group will review the educational interpreter role holistically, and make recommendations to the Board and to the Legislature.

PESB and the Paraeducator Board set credentialing policy for paraeducators and certificated staff. These credentials include certificates and role requirements. Requirements for a credential can include assessments from PESB or other agencies and organizations; national certificates; licensure from another agency such as the Department of Health; and training programs.

Between meetings, focus group members are encouraged to communicate with their organizations and networks to receive input. Find policy background information on educational interpreters for the deaf.
