National standards and competencies adoption

National professional standards are now being integrated into each of Washington’s endorsement competencies. This transition maintains the rigor of endorsement competencies. Adoption of each new standard will go through a vetting process with stakeholders and content area experts. Once the national standards are adopted, they will replace the existing Washington endorsement competencies. Future versions of the national standards will also be adopted, and they will be reviewed on a seven to ten year cycle, but no sooner than two years after adoption.

What is the review process?

During the review process, we ask for feedback from stakeholders and experts through an online survey. The following graphic describes the review process:

How will the national standard be used once they are adopted?

  • Programs will use the endorsement competency standards for pre-service or in-service teachers seeking to obtain their endorsements.
  • Washington State uses the endorsement competency standards to develop the content assessment which educators must take to earn a specific endorsement.
  • These standards are for teacher preparation programs and teacher candidates; they are not student learning standards.
