Support for Educator Preparation Programs

PESB is committed to supporting educator preparation programs (EPPs) in Washington state, while also ensuring accountability.

Purpose of Support

PESB support for EPPs is designed to:

  • Provide structured guidance and resources on PESB program standards, PESB role standards, instructional topic requirements, CCDEI standards, and processes.
  • Provide feedback to program leaders as they work to increase alignment with standards.
  • Encourage positive and professional interaction.
  • Develop general-use tools and resources. Our role is to guide programs and foster collaboration while maintaining the Board’s decision-making independence.

Support Options

Support for Approval Preparation

  • Provide guidance on what is needed to be a successful program, e.g., sustainability, organizational support, curriculum, and best practices around standard implementation.
  • Collect and share best practices from other preparation programs.
  • Offer resource-based support for new program endorsements.

Learn more about the approval process.

Support for Review Preparation

  • Develop and provide resources to help programs understand expectations laid out in the PESB program standards.
  • Connect program leaders with learning opportunities.
  • Explore Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) review rubric progressions and meanings.

Focused Follow-up Support for programs in extended limited approval

  • Offer regular meetings with program leaders working on program improvements.
  • Assist with developing goal-setting action plans to meet unmet standards.
  • Support preparation for board report presentations.

Learn more about the review process.

Support for New Program Leaders

  • Connect leaders with available tools and networks for ongoing learning.
  • Connect leaders with appropriate PESB staff members when necessary.
  • Provide informal orientation on PESB standards and processes.

Program Support Expectations and Limitations

To ensure effective support, programs are expected to adhere to the following:

  1. Preparation and Focused Inquiries: Please be prepared with well-defined questions, relevant materials, and specific clarification needs. This enables PESB staff to provide precise, targeted feedback.
  2. Constructive Environment: Support is intended to be collaborative and respectful, where programs model dispositions expected of their candidates, such as professionalism, equity, and cultural responsiveness.
  3. Guidance Versus Authority: PESB staff serve as guides, offering insights on standards and quality improvements, while programs retain responsibility for decision-making and implementation. The PESB Board, not PESB staff, has approval and regulatory authority.
  4. Responsibility for Professional Learning: Programs take ownership of understanding and meeting standards, engaging in self-directed learning to address any areas for growth.

Please be aware that PESB has some limitations for support:

  1. PESB staff doesn’t provide step-by-step instructions for meeting standards, but we’re here to clarify and guide.
  2. PESB staff doesn’t create or revise program-specific materials, but we’ll share best practices and provide feedback on program-created materials to support you.
  3. Support is focused on improving understanding and processes, not regulatory decisions.
