Theatre Arts (2013)

1.0 Elements, Techniques, and Foundations

The candidate possesses knowledge of the vocabulary of theatre including elements, techniques, and foundations.

1.A Understands the elements, techniques, and foundations of theatre.

1.A.1 Elements of theme, character, setting, plot, conflict, and dialogue.

1.A.2 Techniques of movement, voice, and character development.

1.A.3 Foundations of acting, directing, playwriting, improvisation, theatre management, and design.

 

2.0 Production

The candidate possesses knowledge and skills needed to produce theatre within the given educational theatre setting.

2.A Understands and applies the principles of design and technical production including set, lights, costume, props, sound, and makeup.

2.B Identifies and applies various techniques in vocal production, movement, improvisation, acting, directing, playwriting, theatre management, and design.

2.C Understands and applies different literary genres and selection of plays for an audience.

2.D Communicates selection, interpretation, and critical response of theatre work.

2.E Understands and applies directing principles and various techniques.

2.F Understands and applies various acting techniques.

2.G Understands and applies theatre facilities and theatre management skills.

2.H Understands and applies appropriate safety procedures and relevant legal requirements in a theatrical setting.

 

3.0 Artistic Processes

The candidate possesses knowledge and skills of the artistic processes of creating, performing, and responding.

3.A Understands the purpose and function of the creating process in theatre.

3.B Understands the purpose and function of the performing process in theatre.

3.C Understands the purpose and function of the responding process in theatre.

 

4.0 Communication Through Theatre

The candidate possesses knowledge and skills of communication tools in theatre.

4.A Understands the purpose of theatre as a communication tool.

4.B Understands the purpose of student expression of ideas and feelings through theatre.

 

5.0 Dramatic Literature

The candidate understands and analyzes dramatic literature from historical and contemporary eras within a variety of cultures, genres, and periods.

5.A Understands the distinguishing characteristics of periods, cultures, and genres in dramatic literature.

5.B Analyzes dramatic literature from a variety of historical periods, cultures, and genres and applies it within a theatrical context.

5.C Understands the historical development of theatrical performance and production.

5.D Understands the processes for generating new dramatic literature.

 

6.0 Connections Within the Arts and Across Other Content Areas

The candidate is able to relate knowledge and skills within and across the arts.

6.A Understands and applies the collaborative process to theatre work.

6.B Integrates theatre into other arts and subject areas.

6.C Creates new works through the playwriting process.

6.D Integrates theatre into life and the world of work.

6.E Understand ways that learning in theatre can support understanding of concepts and topics across multiple academic subject areas, by focusing on concepts shared by multiple subjects, as well as by using the arts to illustrate and explore nonarts content.

6.F Understand ways that learning in theatre can support students with different learning styles and varying language skills, which can support student learning across all subject areas.

6.G Understand ways that learning in theatre can support the development of 21st Century Skills, Habits of Mind, Social and Emotional Learning, and can contribute to success in and out of school.

 

7.0 Instructional Methods of Theatre

The candidate understands and is able to apply pedagogical knowledge and skills appropriate to the teaching of theatre.

7.A Understands theatre as a learning process of child development.

7.B Develops ageappropriate theatre experiences to meet learning goals of all students.

7.C Identifies and applies techniques for assessing student backgrounds, aptitudes, skills, interests, and learning needs appropriate to a school theatre program.

7.D Articulates the rationale and applies concepts of cultural competency in theatre education.

 

8.0 Contemporary Issues

The candidate investigates and understands the relationship between theatre arts and contemporary issues.

8.A Understands the historical context and significance of preexisting art works.

8.B Understands the relationship of the first amendment to theatre education.

8.C Considers first amendment issues and audience appropriateness to decision making in theatre education.

8.D Applies knowledge of plagiarism, copyright, and royalty laws to theatre work.

8.E Understands and articulates logical rationale for the role of theatre in the school curriculum, including philosophical and social foundations for theatre education.
