The PESB has established numerous policies and programs that support schools districts recruiting and supporting a highly effective educator workforce including:
Out of Endorsement/Assignment
Districts needing to assign teachers out-of-endorsement can receive guidance for waivers. districts can also use this tool to match course codes and endorsements.
Field Placement
Beginning September 30, 2010, districts receiving requests for field placement of student teachers should check to see if the preparation program is approved or authorized to offer field placements in Washington State.Professional Certification
The Professional Certificate is designed to help educators demonstrate they have a positive impact on student learning. It is an individualized, classroom-based process that focuses on increased skills to impact student learning rather than credits. The certificate is fully aligned with Washington’s expectations for K-12 student learning expectations.
Educator Retooling Conditional Loan Scholarship Program
The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) has funding available through the Educator Retooling Program to support Washington certified teachers to add the following endorsements: Secondary Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Physics, Middle Level Mathematics, Middle Level Science, Bilingual Education, and English Language Learners.
Programs for Prospective Educators
The PESB supports recruitment efforts by providing programs that focus on recruitment in shortage areas including Alternative Routes to Certification, Paraprofessional Pipeline and Recruiting Washington Teachers.
The PESB has announced plans to develop alternative routes to certification for prospective principals.
Adding an Endorsement
There are multiple ways to add an endorsement to your teaching certificate in Washington State, including completing an endorsement program, earning National Board Certification or a Pathway 1 or 2 program. Partnerships
Learn about district and higher ed partnership vision and events in your region.
- Partnership between a P-12 building and a university program may focus on mentor training, placement norms, professional development, induction, or other areas of mutual interest. In some cases the university faculty and candidates are a part of the building or district's strategic plan for student learning, professional development, or a workforce initiative.
- The PESB is working with district administrators and university faculty to identify areas of common interest. Each conversation is emerging at its own pace and with a unique flavor as regional needs and solutions come forward.
