The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) uses a variety of data to inform policy decisions and assess initiative success. PESB also reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of educator preparation programs (EPP), licensure, certificate and educator workforce policies. These data originate from sources such as licensure and certificate programs, from sister state agencies such as Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), as well as directly from the test vendors. The purpose of these pages is to show how data is used to advance the goals defined in PESB’s strategic plan. Our partners and stakeholders can use these data points to help inform and support their own work.
Where did our goals originate?
In its 2016-2020 strategic plan, PESB set an overarching objective that “(a)ll P-12 students are supported by effective educators.” PESB established six goals, that when pursued and met, would further its mission of ensuring educator quality so that Washington’s students complete their schooling as successful learners and citizens. Within these goals, key performance indicators track progress. Some of these indicators were based on data collected at the time the plan was created; others were aspirational, with the hope that by 2020 the data would be collected.
How does PESB advance its strategic plan goals?
PESB uses data to build displays demonstrating progress towards meeting the goals defined in the Board’s strategic plan. These displays will be expanded over time to share the slowly but ever growing body of data around the work of educator preparation, licensure, and workforce development in Washington.
When will new data pages be created?
These data pages begin by displaying the progress toward meeting PESB’s strategic plan goals using currently available data. While some questions will be answered, the hope is that the data elicits additional questions from stakeholders. As reoccurring questions are collected and additional data become available, displays will be added and updated.
How do I use the data?
In addition to PESB’s use of the data for its work, many partners and stakeholders, including EPPs, education researchers, professional organizations, media, legislative staff, and elected officials, look to PESB to provide insight and responses to questions related to educator preparation and workforce in Washington State. PESB want to provide the most valuable and most accurate data possible. To do that, we collaborate closely with data contributors to make sure that the answers to your questions can be clearly displayed and understood. We rely on user feedback to review, revise, and update these pages on a regular basis.
Why could this data look different than other data?
There are a variety of data sources that could be used, and depending on which one is used (or in combination), there may be variance in reported numbers. The caveats and methodology section of each data display include its data source and the analytic choices made that could impact the numbers PESB reports.
