Pathways to Add an Endorsement in Washington

Certified Teachers in Washington have several pathways to add an endorsement.  These pathways are designed to take advantage of endorsements that are closely related (i.e. Biology and Chemistry). 

 Pathway Type Definition   Requirements

Pathway 1

Available for endorsements that are defined as closely aligned. Candidates need to meet 2 requirements:
 

Program not Required
 
  1. 90 days of teaching in the current endorsement while holding that endorsement
  2. Pass the WEST-E

Pathway 2

Available for endorsements that are defined as related. Candidates need to meet 3 requirements:

Approved Program Required

  1. 90 days of teaching in the current endorsement while holding that endorsement*
  2. Pass the WEST-E 
  3. Successfully complete a pedagogy assessment

Pathway 3

Available for teachers to add “unrelated” endorsements. Candidates need to meet 2 requirements:
 

Approved Program Required
  1. Fulfill the endorsement program requirements of a regionally approved institution
  2. Pass the WEST-E

*90 day requirement is waived for Elementary Education endorsed teachers adding Middle Level Math or Middle Level Science.

Comparable Endorsements

Teachers holding endorsements issued prior to 2003 may use the pathway chart to add an endorsementFind the "old" endorsement in the second column, then see what "new" endorsement is its equivalent.  Use the pathway chart listed above to see which endorsement(s) may be added via pathway 1 or 2.
