ADD AN ENDORSEMENT
One Step Closer to Meeting the Highly Qualified Requirement for Teachers
Based upon the work and recommendations of the Professional Educator Standards Board, the State Board of Education adopted two new pathways to adding endorsements to teaching certificates. The newly created pathways are "endorsement dependent" meaning that whether these options apply depends upon the endorsement that the teacher currently holds. WAC 181-82A-204.
This Pathway Chart that identifies the endorsements to which these pathways apply.
Pathway 1 -
Pathway 1 involves passing the Praxis II test in the endorsement being added, documentation of 90 days of teaching experience in the current endorsement area identified as a Pathway 1 option for the endorsement being added, and applying directly to OSPI for the endorsement.
Pathway 2 -
Pathway 2 involves passing the Praxis II test in the endorsement being added and enrolling in a Pathway 2 program at a college/university approved to offer the endorsement. The following process is involved in pursuing an endorsement via Pathway 2:
Eligibility criteria:
Fully contracted as a teacher or long term substitute teacher by a Washington public school or state approved private school, verification of 90 days teaching experience in the current endorsement area that is identified as a Pathway 2 option for the endorsement being added, and a district letter of support that identifies the means by which the district will provide the opportunity for the candidate to teach in the endorsement area being added.
Steps:
Pass the Praxis II in the endorsement area being added, contact a college/university approved to offer the endorsement, prepare the products related to the endorsement using the Pedagogy Assessment Instrument protocol, participate in observations conducted by an individual assigned by the college/university for a minimum of two times and a maximum of four times.
If successful, the college/university will recommend that the endorsement be added; if unsuccessful, the college/university will create a Pathway 3 Teacher Development Plan.
