PATHWAYS TO ADDING ENDORSEMENTS
The Professional Educator Standards Board approved two pathways to adding endorsements to teaching certificates. The pathways are "endorsement dependent" meaning that whether these options apply depends upon the endorsement that the teacher currently holds. WAC 181-82A-204.
This Pathways Chart that identifies the endorsements to which these pathways apply.
Pathway 1 -
Candidates who hold an endorsement in the first column of the Pathways Chart and have 90 days teaching experience in that endorsement may add endorsements that are aligned in the second column on the chart by taking and receiving a passing score on the WEST-E in the new endorsement area.
Steps:
Pass the endorsement testing in the endorsement area being added and submit your endorsement application to OSPI.
Pathway 2 -
Candidates who hold an endorsement in the first column of the Pathways Chart and have 90 days teaching experience in that endorsement may add endorsements that are aligned in the third column on the chart by taking and receiving a passing score on the WEST-E and completing a college or university supervised Pedagogy Assessment.
Steps:
Pass the endorsement testing in the endorsement area being added, contact a college/university approved to offer the endorsement, prepare the products related to the endorsement using the Pedagogy Assessment Instrument protocol, participate in observations conducted by an individual assigned by the college/university for a minimum of two times and a maximum of four times.
If successful, the college/university will recommend that the endorsement be added; if unsuccessful, the college/university will create a Pathway 3 Teacher Development Plan.
Pathway 3 -
This pathway is not on the chart and is the traditional way to add an endorsement which includes coursework, taking and receiving a passing score on the WEST-E and completing a university or college supervised Pedagogy Assessment or other observation instrument if required by program.

90 Day Teaching Requirement for Pathway 1 or Pathway 2-
For both Pathways I and II, the teacher must demonstrate that they have 90 days teaching experience in the endorsement held.
Waiver for 90 Day Teaching Requirement -
Teachers who hold a K-8 endorsement and who are unemployed may have the 90 teaching requirement waived if they are adding the Middle Level Math or Middle Level Science endorsement. This is the only waiver of the 90 day teaching requirement that is allowed.
