What is the Professional Certificate Portfolio of Evidence Assessment?

In the 2007, the legislature passed SSSB 5955, directing the Professional Educator Standards Board to “Set performance standards and develop, pilot, and implement an external professional-level certification assessment based on demonstrated teaching skill. In the development of this assessment, consideration shall be given to changes in professional certification components such as the culminating seminar.” As directed by the legislation, the PESB has been developing the ProCert Portfolio of Evidence Assessment, which will be implemented in January 2010. As a result of having the assessment in place, candidates will submit their portfolio to an external source where it will be scored by a cadre of trained Washington educators rather than by university faculty. These scorers will include ProCert facilitators, program directors, program completers, and other experienced educators.
